Today I was a witness of location shoot of the film "Year 1612" directed by Vladimir Khotinenko.

Of course, you can save the pics!

"Year 1612" is supposed to be an epic historical movie about Russian "smuta" (dark times). For a long time we've been taught that during "smuta" Russian people fought against Polish opressors. But in reality it wasn't fight against foreign occupation but civil war between legitimate Polish tzar who had been invited to reign, and a bunch of conspirators who pledged their loyalty to foreign tzar but later betrayed him. It was a hard time - it's a historical fact that during "smuta" the population in Russia decreased three times - so many people were killed, sold into slavery or died of hunger.
The director is in s very tricky position. The budget of the picture is ovwr 10 mln dollars, it's huge by Russian standards, so there is no doubt that the film is state-financed (at least, partially). So the film has to pay the state back by proclaiming patriotic values and polishing the history. OTOH, the director is a good, decent person who, by far, did good decent films. He promises an epic adventure story with love, conspiracies and fights.

The things on the backs of horsemen are weird. I'm also intrigued and I'm going to ask somebody who is an expert. I've never seen anything like that in Russian history books. I suppose it's a decorative element - they're supposed to escort either tzar or some other person of high standing (the one in the tent).

Very cool! I'll definately have to keep an eye out on the net once it's released. My husband's folks are Ukrainian and his mother loves it when I can find her Ukrainian or Russian films.

Officially the release date is fall 2007, but Russian moviemaking rarely goes according to schedule so I suppose it will be released in a year, at best.

I'll try... although it was pure luck that I caught the filming. And - a friend of mine says about the feathery decoration of horsemen's backs that it might be some medieval Polish military insignia.
