I think it's much more likely that Joss doesn't particularly care what the Zeitgeist is. For that matter, who is anybody to say what the "Zeitgeist" is? The audience is not universally in agreement on just about anything. Not everybody, for instance, cares whether or not Buffy knows if Spike is still alive, or whether or not Spike has any role at all in Season Eight. I certainly don't; if anything, I want Spike far, far away from Season Eight because I think he got too much story- and screentime in Seasons Six and Seven.
