Not to mention that you have the bits where you can easily guess what's happened - the three years Faith spent in jail, for instance, where we can assume a more or less linear development from her cameo in "Judgement" to her friendliness with the guards in "Salvage". If we watch a character go from A to D, leave them in E and then rejoin them a few years later and find them at H, explanations are nice but not absolutely necessary. If, however, the character is suddenly back at B for no stated reason...
