Funny thing about S7, I barely remember what Xander did in it. It doesn't matter if he has more lines than Spike and Willow, what matters they had more going on for them than Xander did, they had a memorable story about themselves and their redemption, Spike had three episodes dedicated to him, Willow had two. First Date is a pathetic excuse for a Xander episode since Buffy's story with Wood and Andrew's story with First!Jonathan had more screen time and were far more interesting and helped moving the plot.
So other than standing in the corner and saying stupid jokes, I didn't have any hope for a good role to Xander in S8. Now I'm honestly happy, shocked and impressed. I didn't know Joss actually cared for the character anymore.
I have high hopes for a good Giles arc, but when will we be able to see it? I don't know. Xander's arc will start next year, Giles' will probably be the year after.
