The thing I fear most is that this is Joss's idea of "grown up." And I fear that it's much like the Aaron Sorkin written Studio 60 this week where it was clear that even though Sorkin is in his forties, he still has that high school inner geek heavily informing his views of women and characters. So many times when dealing with BtVS it feels like Joss's idea of BtVS never really really left high school and that's why he handed most of Season 6 to Marti and why Season 7 was back to high school with an influx on teen slayers and the character issues of Season 6 largely swept under the rug.
Also, Joss had so little to do with AtS that I tend not to ascribe a lot of AtS's issues to Joss. Some stuff that they've said he had contributions too, yeah. I credit those. But most of the reports over most seasons had Joss only having intermittant input with AtS. So, while certainly he deserves to have AtS on his credits, I tend not to look at AtS in quite the way as BtVS and Firefly as being unilaterally Joss's POV.
Commerically, though, it really only the 'hard core' BtVS/Whedon fans and comic fans who would come into the comic audience so I tend not to think of the comic audience as the BtVS audience at large. It's a rather specific segment of the BtVS audience where most of the casual fans have little idea of it. And it really seems to be targeted to Cour 4/Early Years fans -- which is fine. Nothing wrong with that. But in general, I saw the early years. I was looking more for a continuation of the show as a whole rather than trying to capture Season 1 sensibilities. (But then, Joss tried that sort of reboot at the start of Season 7 so I'm not particularly surprised that he's again trying to go back to an earlier emotional tone of the show. I was just never a fan of Season 1.)
