I think superhero comics have their own rules of storytelling. First, teenagers in them always stay teenagers. I was amazed to find out that Spiderman has started his quest agains criminals in 1962 and continued it through 60-s, 70-s, 80-s, 90-s and in new Century without growing up. So when Joss said it is "comics timeline" it basically means they'll always stay this way.
Secondly, it means Joss is serving totally different audience - teenagers, mostly boys. Hence the story about the empowered teenagers with a leader who's just one of them.
I'm going to follow comics storyline and to see if I can find something worth using in fanfics, but and I don't think I could obsess about comics the way I'm still obsessed about the show.
