I choose to interpret it is as a big semaphore signal from the authors to the audience that AR is no longer an issue for them (and for Buffi) when it comes to Spike/Buffy relations.
I've got a feeling that it's no longer an issue for the authors because they don't plan to continue this particular storyline. If Joss was planning to torture develop them further he'd already started figuring out something nasty for them. [/cynical]
For Joss, story is God. Characters development is secondary. As soon as Spike crossed over to AtS, he became all about Angel.
If only they could shake off another cop-out after Seeing Red: Kennedy...
