I agree, the fanfiction mood is pretty strong in the first issue. I think part of reason is the absence of actors. But partly it's due to the fact that Joss has to win over the regular comic audience - hence flashy if not particularly sensible storylines. Why losing virginity triggers spontaneous growth? Is ir a metaphor for something, a set-up for a complex plot or maybe Joss just wanted to make some funny quips?
