I think part of Joss' conception that A/C was unpopular with "most fans" was that at the time, he was hanging out at and pretty much exclusively reading the Bronze Beta board, which tends to have mostly B/A shippers (basically, because the B/S people felt unwelcome and went elsewhere). If one is only in contact with one segment of fandom, then of course, perceptions will be slanted.
