One can argue that the effort to keep Wes and Illyria apart could be explained by plot necessity - because Lynch wanted to make this scene shocking and memorable. One may argue that Spike may be using Illyria's need for help as a pretext to come to Angel's help in the battle.
But I'm so intrigued by your idea I don't want to argue. Jossverse is so rich of possibilities - anything can happen. I can imagine the situation you describe.
May I reconmmend you to start a separate thread on Angel: AtF community and repost your thoughts? Because I really, really want other fans to see it. We'll have a lot of time to speculate. :)
