It's quite possible that Joss narrates the story similar to Angel's arc in season 5. But the narrative structure is non-linear and doesn't provide emotional payoff. It's like a detective story. There could be a crime of passion in it's core, but the story isn't about passions, it's about the investigation. In the end we find out who and why commited this or that act. But we don't feel for the criminals and their victims. We enjoy the analytical abilities of Sherlock Holmes or Hercules Poirot instead.
Maybe in several years we'll find out that Buffy was in a desperate situation. But it won't be mattering by then.
