Poor Xander, all those years of character building down the drain, to take away every meaning he ahd as a character, ruin his status as big brother and for what... ??? Um, I really don't see how "every meaning he had as a character" would be taken away. Nor do I see his relationship with Buffy necessarily changing a great deal if they get together. They can still have the same level of trust and companionship. Relationships, like people, are fluid, and always changing. They have multiple layers of meaning, which may become more prominent or recede depending on the circumstances.
Although, I do think it's possible that Xander may be killed. I think, since he's continuing with the story for the forseeable future, Joss may want to kill one of the core four, so as to keep the tension up, remind us that no one is safe. Joss does seem to have it in for Xander, having planned to kill him both in season 5 and in season 7. However, I think Giles is the most likely character to be offed.
